Some new work

Here's some stuff that I've been working on lately

I created the circles in Illustrator, just some abstract vector work...

This one is another generation..

And this one has been generated according to a maths curve. But I can't rememebr which one. Don't they look good as a group? I could probably make badges out of this third one, eh? ;p

hmm...not sure how to put borders on the work.

Also, when you hear the name MARCEL, you might think of Marcel Duchamp, the famous artist, no? Well, I've just been reading a bit about him and think that if it was named after him, he wouldn't be the ideal artist because what he was trying to achieve with his art is different to mine. He tried to challenge what art was, and he did parodies of famous works..

So, either Marcel might be renamed to a more suitable artist, OR I'll have to remind people that they aren't the one and same person!

Cheers!

on a side note...

On a side note,

My homepage at work is set to the age, so when i'm bored i trawl through the news reading bits and pieces. I read just then that Angelina Jolie gives away 1/3 of her income to charity... That's a whopping amount. I know that even 2/3rds of her income would total milliions, but still, it's 1/3 of what she has.

I wonder what would happen if I gave away 1/3 of what I had...

Could you?

ps. I've been busy setting up and formatting my newly aquired computer at home - hence no new work to show at the moment.

Hallelujah! A child is born!!

Hey I WORKED IT OUT!!!! AFTER 2 WEEKS!!!

Well, firstly, we have nicknamed my computer program that I'm growing. He is currently called MARCEL, courtesy of Eirian Chapman. What do you reckon of the name? My iPod is called Michael, it kind of goes together.. Although I'm not a big fan of calling all kids names with the same first letter..

I managed to get Marcel to randomly pick an image, and duplicate movieclips all over the place.

Below are the results:

What do you reckon? Some look really good, while others don't look quite as well composed, or thought out. Too much repetition of the same object, too large, too much space, etc.. Well, that's what you get if you ask for randomness.

WHERE TO FROM HERE:
Well the above pics are from my fav studio PSYOP (see right for link) and I basically took a whole lot of screenshots of their work, and mixed them up together in Marcel. Sort of like a moodboard for PSYOP. Eventually I will be asking you guys for images and work so I can make remixes of your work. Or even remixes of your face, your everyday life, etc etc.

I need to hone down my code, give it parameters so I have more control over the layout, but that is another giant leap for me. You might have to wait a bit.

I was thinking about putting parameters on the program, and realised that I'm considering what parameters I will put and how that will affect my design, etc etc - But I realise that THATS WHAT WE DO ALL THE TIME when we are doing graphic design, except we never even consider it.

Imagine I am designing a poster:
I, ErnMei, have 10 different pictures.
I, ErnMei, can scale them up or down, but not blow them out of proportion
I, ErnMei, have to put this amount of text on the page.

I wonder if we would end up with something that Marcel has spat out, or whether we would get something so clean, with white space, perfect leading etc etc.

Is that because we are designers and we are considering the audience? Or have we lost some sort of freedom in our work?

Feel free to leave comments and ideas about Marcel or anything.

Hello World!

Well I'm not sneezing and wheezing anymore, and I can actually smell again!! Woot!

Currently i am stuck on one area of my research project.

In simple terms, I am looking to create a program in flash which
1. picks random images from a selection that i have created
2. places them randomly on the screen

To do that I need a placeholder that I attach script to. A movieclip.
I can get this movieclip to pick random images, or i can get the movieclip to duplicate itself.

But not both at the same time!! I really need this movieclip to duplicate itself, each with a script that says it needs to pick a random image. So far I'm getting duplicates with the SAME image, or one movieclip with a random image.

ANy ideas?

I've signed up to a forum (actionscript.org) and posted for help. Adam Parker is yet to be seen.

I think i'm spending too much time on this problem when I could be doing other things like picking a name for this project, thinking of collaboration ideas, etc etc.

Here's something I found on someone else's blog. His comment was that no way this Lois Lane thing would be shown nowadays. So true, huh?

news

News for the week:

• Adam Parker is teaching Flash to 2nd & 3rd years, teaching them coding that I need to learn for this project!!
If it is on a Friday, I'll sit in, and that might save me the hours of pouring over online tutes :)

• Bud! !!!! You, ^.^ !!! Me, ^.^ iMac !!! ^.^ hehehe!!! (haha did you guys understand that?)

------------

Thanks for all the posts and feedback guys,
I will definitely be calling on some work for collaborative pieces.

As for Bud's post: uni guys, check that out too because it's a really interesting idea.
Ants: Havent checked it out yet, but it sounds familiar. I might have seen it before.

OH DEAR!

I just found out we have mid year assesment, and according to the brief, i have till 9am tomorrow to create a blog and upload stuff onto it!!! Ahh!!

******************************

My research proposal aims to

• research the relationship between technology and humans

• research the idea that a computer can be an artist

• see how computer generated art can be used in graphic design

or how it can further the design community in other ways.

• who else is doing this work, why are they doing, how are they using it?

• oh yeh, generate my own computer art. (how? not entirely sure.
The plan is to use flash, give the computer a set of rules, then tell it to run rampant and do what it wants.)

• WILL DESIGN BE TAKEN OVER BY COMPUTER-ALIENS??? NOOOOO!!!

******************************

Things I found on the net:

the guy above, joshua davis, is my current fav. He did the stuff below.

Basically he uploaded millions of images from some illustrator, then told the computer to place the images however it wanted, and whatever scale, providing that it made some sort of curve. Looks cool huh? And would have taken ages to do by hand. JOSHUA DAVIS IS GOING TO BE AT SEMI PERMANENT. ARE YOU GUYS GOING?

Below are variations of computer generated art by other people. As you can see the results are varied but i think i'll go for something vector.

My progress so far has been slow... I am by no means a geek (perhaps a tryhard one) and suck at coding. But I like doing it and here's one i prepared earlier:

I used Eirian's drawing of the crow and created some dots and random lines. I know it looks really primitive at the moment, but im still getting the hang of putting multiple pictures on stage without flash screwing up.

Using Eirian's drawings though, gave me the idea that perhaps this project can be a collaboration between people. Maybe you guys can give me old sketchbooks, and i'll put them into my program, and you'll get a totally new layout out of it. Sort of like a remix project! What do you guys think?

Q's _>
• Have i been clear in what my research project is about? (Coz i dont know if ive explained it well enough)
• Do you think computer generated art i've shown here looks nice? Which one do you like?
• Would you guys be interested in contributing illustrations, words, photos, etc once i've got the program up and running?
• My ipod is called michael, maybe this remix program should be given a name... Because calling it my "art-generating computer program" is too long.. Would you laugh at me if I gave it a name like
